About our mission statement...
In the Fall of 2015, members of the McGill Ecotox lab met to draft a mission statement. We discussed our core values as scientists and how they relate to the work that we do. The initial draft was passed around through email and further refined and edited. Our statement (below) will be revisited as group members change and our research evolves. The idea to write this statement came from Elena Bennett and Chris Buddle - two professors in our department. They in turn were inspired by this blog.
Mission Statement
Chemical pollution is a global problem, with human activities being the primary source of this problem. Exposure to chemicals can have profound effects on humans and wildlife, ranging from changes in gene expression to ecosystem-level effects. The well-being of our planet and ourselves is intricately linked to understanding the effects of chemicals, and proper management of these chemicals. In our laboratory, we study the genetic, epigenetic, physiological, and behavioural effects of chemicals on birds and fish, as sentinels of chemical pollution. Tools developed in the laboratory are then applied in the field to assess the health or susceptibility of individuals, populations, and species. We strive to have our research play a key role in policy-related decisions to improve and maintain the health and biodiversity of our planet.
